FALL OF SANTANDER
ENTRY OF TROOPS REFUGEES’ REPORTS HORRORS OF LAST SCENES United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. 1 (Received Aug. 26, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, August 25. A Valladolin radio message states that two rebel battalions have entered Santander, and the main body will enter on Thursday. British refugees who arrived at St. Jean de Luz aboard the Keith, state that Santander has been without water for several days. There was neither light nor civil organisation, and looting. pillaging, indiscriminate shooting, sheer anarchy and horror prevailed. Hundreds of fishing boats and trawlers sailed with men, women and children fighting for places aboard. Meanwhile the fifth column opened fire on the struggling masses. Four Britons stole a boat without a rudder and pushed off under fire. They paddled in the darkness for three hours until rescued by the Keith.
