FANTASTIC RUMOURS.
DENIAL BY N.Z. CONSUL. AIRMEN’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE 40 JAPANESE PLANES DOWNED. (By Telegraph-—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The following telegrams were received toy the Chinese Consul from Nanking yesterday:— Fantastic rumours have been circulated toy Japanese sources alleging mutiny in Nanking, discord among Government leaders, and the detention General Pai Ghung-Si. Such statements are absolutely without foundation. The Government leaders are unanimously determined to resist Japanese aggression, and excellent morale is exhibited by all the fighting services, as well as the entire populace. Chinese airmen have achieved a distinguished record, downing already nearly 40 Japanese planes and continuing to take heavy toll of Japanese raiders. The Japanese left flank of the Shanghai front has been seriously crippled by the Chinese occupation of the wayside wharf, which is now confirmed. The Chinese forces continue to press in on the Japanese right flank, which is practically cornered. Two Japanese planes which were raiding the Nanklng-Wuhu railway were shot down at Kiangning. Air Raid Frustrated. Twenty Japanese planes attempted to raid Nanking at dawn to-day, and during an air battle two raiders were downed, one at Tungtai and another at Yangchow, while two Chinese machines were slightly damaged. Fifty Japanese transports have arrived at Taku, bringing infantry, cavalry, artillery and military supplies from Shanhai-Kuan. It Is estimated that the Japanese troops In North China toUl 100,000. The Chinese forces at Shanghai are consolidating their position in the eastern section of the International Settlement. The Baikal and East Seward Roads, running parallel to the river front, are now under complete Chinese control. Three Japanese planes were shot down to-day In Shanghai and elsevhere.
