FANCY DRESS BALL. HAMILTON EABT SOHOOL. MOST INTERESTING PROGRAMME. > ’ L 1 The Alexandra Hall presented a - scene of animation and gaiety on Thursday evening on the occasion of j the annual plain and fancy dress -ball of the Hamilton East School. Cos- ! tumes of all types contributed towards making the scene a kaleidoscope of , colour and there was an exceptionally large attendance, the takings being the best for some years. Multi-coloured streamers transformed the hall, and the supper-room was most attractively decorated with streamers in the school colours, blue and black, the tables looking charming with daffodils, Jonquils and greenery, most artistically • arranged. During the evening a delicious supper was
served for the children by an energetic ladies’ committee and helpers, under the chairmanship of Mrs Higginson. The grand marches, performed with precision and enjoyment by the children, were a feature of the evening, in which popular innovations were the Parents’ and Children’s Dance and the Old Pupils’ Dance- A varied programme, extending from singing games, delightfully performed by the Infants, to old-time dances, songs, and the charming folk dances of other days, by the older pupils, was presented and warmly received by the many parents and spectators. The high standard of the items throughout the entire programme speaks volumes for the training of the children, and their gaiety and evident enjoyment added a spontaneity which was most attractive. Particularly effective -were the folk dances by the different squads, which were Intricate, and gracefully performed. An unusual and most interesting item was a haka (Fishing) realistically given by the boys, following a short talk on the hnka by Mr Leech. Excellent music was played by the Regent Orchestra, and novelty dances added further to the enjoyment of the evening. During the evening a brief speech of congratulation and thanks was made by the chairman of the School Committee, Mr H. M. Baker. To the headmaster, Mr W. A. Curteis, and school staff, the many helpers and the ladles of the committee, for the training of the children, and the efficiency of the arrangements throughout the evening, the warmest praise is due for a particularly enjoyable and successful function.
