The military position Is almost statlo. Activity In the various aectora quietened down with the eunset. The British, French and American naval oommandera protested against Japanese warships firing from near the Bund, where foreign men-of-war are moored. The removal of Japanese warships half-a-mlle down the river has been requested. The Chinese, despite a protective barrage from Japanese warships, frustrated further Japanese attempts to land troops at Wooeung and Pootung. All day furious fighting continued among the burning buildings. Flames In the eastern portion of the settlement gutted every building in the Hongkew and Yangtsepoo districts in two square miles. The Chinese attacked the Japanese inside the settlement at Hongkew. Between Two Fires. The Chinese, aided by light tanks, re'newed the attempt to drive back the stubborn Japanese marines to the river. Chinese artillery near the North Station are heavily bombarding these troops, who are between two fires —namely, from the North Station and Pootung. Chinese planes bombed all Japanese areas, to which the Japanese responded by bombing the Chinese on both sides of the.Whangpoo River. A shell either from Pootung or from the Idzumo fell near the town hall in Nanking Road, in the heart of the settlement* Others injured 15 Chine'se In the Bubbling Well Road, In the western district. The Chinese state that British Guards at the Garden Bridge across the mouth of the Soochow Creek, near the British Consulate, disarmed several hundred retreating Japanese soldiers who were attempting to take refuge In the western settlement from the Hongkew. area.
