SHORTER WORKING WEEK. PROMOTIONS ANNOUNCED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Slxty-two men have been called up for training for the police force and are being posted to the Trentham oamp In continuance of the arrangement made with the Defence Department, which Is working satisfactory. Recent promotions are: To the rank of sergeant, Constables Neary, Sargent, Lines, MoGettlgan (Auckland), McKle (Wellington), Soutlnvorth (■Christchurch), Irwin (Dunedin); to deteotlve-sergeant, Deteotlves McLennan (Wellington), Thomas (Timaru). Eighteen constables who have completed their probationary service have been appointed to the permanent staff. The Inauguration of the 48-hour week, Involves an Increase In the number of non-commissioned officers and constables and the following constables have been appointed acting-sergeants on six months’ trial:—Messrs A. Johnson (Wellington), Davis (Mangaweka), Ronnington (Napier), who take up duty at Wellington, W. (I. Bonnet (Wellington) and W. S. Brown (of Bartlett’s) who are transferred to Auckland; Matthews (Coalgatc), Kearns (Riecarton), Mcßae (Akaroa), who are transferred to Christchurch; Johnston (Timaru), Hogg (Kaitangata) lo Dunedin; McGrath (Hamilton), who remains thereThe 124 constables who have Just completed training have been posted mainly to the four principal centres.
