The touring Springboks played the eighth match of their tour at Christchurch to-day when they met Canterbury, the only province that beat the 1921 South African side. A nice back movement by the Springboks placed them close, but Turner failed to goal from a free kick ten yards outside Canterbury's twentyfive line. However, a bright back movement in which the whole lino handled, Babrow and Hofmeyr giving the necessary penetration and Lawton scored a brilliant try for South Africa, Turner converting. The game was bright and exciting, but Hooper dropped several passes when Canterbury attempted lo get. going, and a little later McAuliffe failed to goal from a difficult, angle. It was not, long, however, before McAuliffe had another shot and again lie ,jusl, missed. Lawton. Bastard and Harris relumed play and Hofmeyr just failed with a dropkick. The Canterbury .forwards led by Whlllans and Millikcn then bustled the visitors, but Lawton saved well and Turner coming into the attack sent Bester and Babrow away for Hooper to secure and kick well down the line. There was plenty of exciting play, the Springboks throwing the ball about from every position. Another fine back movement in which all Hie backs handled saw Lawton score anolher fine try.
