IN A TIGHT CORNER.
HAND-TO-HAND FIGHTING. DESPERATE PLIGHT OF JAPANESE BUILDINGS SET ALIGHT BY INCENDIARY BOMBS. (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright.) (Received August 21, 11 a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 20. Following the most intensive air raids yet carried out, hand-to-hand fighting is raging in the east district. The Japanese are in a tight corner and are desperately battling lo save communications. Incendiary bombs set fire to many more buildings. A blazing oil factory at Pootung lit up the night sky. Foreign buildings at Hongkew and Yangtse Poo are also ablaze. Amid the flames and dense smoke hand-to-hand fighting continues. The bullet-swept Bund is closed to pedestrians. Two Japanese bombers flew into the smoke pall and collided. Buildings on the Bund rocked when the Chinese shelled the coast defence ship Idzumo, many shells passing over foreign warships and sending sailors below decks.
