THE BRITISH PROPOSALS.
WITHDRAWAL OF FORCES. MORE TROOPS FOR CHINA. OMEN AND CHILDREN LEAVE. (Official Wireless.) (Received August 20, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, August 19. The British proposals for the withdrawal of Chinese and Japanese armed forces at Shanghai are under examination at Nanking and Tokio, and representations have been made by Britain in Paris and Washington to secure the co-operation of the French j and American Governments. According to press messages from Paris the French Government has instructed its Ambassadors in Nanking and Tokio to support the British plan. The British troops which are under orders to proceed to China in the ordinary course of the relief, which begin next month, are the second battalion of the Royal Scots at Lahore and the first battalion of the Middlesex Regiment at Singapore. Both moves may be expedited, but so far only the Middlesex Battalion Is in readiness. It will sail by the liner 1 Menelaus, and will subsequently proceed to Shanghai in a warship. According to a press telegram from Shanghai 900 more British women and children left there to-day for Hongkong.
