Japanese marines forcibly detained and disarmed members of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, in violation of of the international agreement. The Shanghai consular body instantly rejected the Japanese proposal to restrict river traffic. It is feared that the matter may lead to an internalional incident. The Chinese are driving a wedge in the middle of the Japanese who arc defending the waterfront beyond Soooliow Creek, surrounding a gaol housing 8000 convicts and 00 British warders in (lie eastern part of the settlement in Ll i c process. If Ihe Chinese reach Ihe waterfront Ihe greater part of Ihe Japanese will be isolated in a dangerous position. The Japanese defences in Yangtse Poo have also been pushed back slightly.
