MR. CYRIL McNEILE. WELL-KNOWN AS “ SAPPER.” United Press Assn.— Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON. Aug. 15. The death has occurred of Mr. Cyril McNeile, the well-known writer of popular stories who adopted the penname of “ Sapper.” Creator of the well-known character in fiction known as “ Bulldog Drummond," Mr. McNeile followed an Army career before taking to the writing of thrillers. Born in 1888, he entered the Royal Engineers in 1907. the origin of his literary pseudonym of “Sapper.” Upon the outbreak of the Great War he held the rank of captain. He retired in 19 19 with the rank of lieu-tenant-colonel. Among the hooks written by “Sapper ” were “ Sergeant Michael Cassidy.” “ Men. Women and Guns,” “ No Man's Land,” “ The Final Count,” •' Temple Tower." “ Tinv Carteret ” and “ The Island of Terror.” LORD STRATHCARRON. LAWYER AND STATESMAN. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, Aug. 15. The death has occurred of Lord Strathcarron, lawyer and statesman. He collapsed when lunching in a restaurant. Formerly Mr lan Macpherson, Lord Strathcarron was born in 18S0 at Newtonmore, In\erness. MR A. W. J. ABBOTT. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The death has occurred at his residence, Rcinuera, of Mr Archibald William Julm Abbott, who was one of the original settlors of the Galatea district.
