YOUTH'S THEFT OF £B. LACK OF HOME INFLUENCE. Mervyn James Rowland Vallilley (18), farm labourer, of Wliatawhata, made a voluntary appearance in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court to-day

before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., on a charge of stealing £5 from Arthur Pratt, who had been staying in the same house with accused, lie pleaded

guilty. Senior-Sergeant G. 11. Lambert, who conducted the case for tlie police, said Vallilley had experienced little home life, losing his parents when he was eight or nine. Since then, lie had been staying with his aunt at Colville. At the beginning of June, accused and his aunt had had a disagreement amt she had told him lo leave. It was then that In* had taken the money. When questioned by the police, he admitted the offence and arrangements had been made to refund the money. I* lo Command!. Mr H. J. MrMullin for accusd. sa'd Vallilley had secured work near Hamilton. In view of the disadvantage* experienced by the youth, lie asked for leniency. Tlie magistrate placed accused on probation for two years, conditional upon the repayment of the £5. “ I cannot make an order for the suppression of aeetised’s name, as lie has appeared in court before." said Mr Paterson, in answer to an appeal for its suppression.
