WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS. R. LEWIS WINS MEN'S SINGLES. MISS EDMONDSON’S SUCCESS. I The Waikato Badminton champion--1 ship tourney was concluded in the . Bledisloe Hall on Saturday evening ; ! when, with the exception of the A > grade combined doubles, all matches were completed. Play was again of a very high standard and on their show--1 ing'severul of the A grade players are . going to lake a prominent pari in the national championships, j As was anticipated, on his play duri ing tlie tournament, R. Lewis, the | young Te Aroha representative, took the A men's singles. He met an experienced opponent in H. H. Fow but tiie Hamilton man could not oounter Lewis’ splendid play. The winner's stroke production and general allround strength stamp him as one of the finest players In the Dominion. Miss M. Edmondson retained her title, but Mrs Yendell, although well out of touch In the first set, showed that she has improved considerably. Te Aroha again figured In the men's doubles where Johnston and Crawford accounted for Lewis and Wright in straight sets. The match produced the good badminton which had been a feature of the men’s doubles throughout the tournament. Johnston and Crawford won mainly on a lower error percentage. A particularly keen struggle ensued in the ladies doubles where the favourites, Mrs Yenned and Miss Edmondson, scored a narrow victory. They went down in a long first set, but from then on held the ascendancy. All four combined well and there were some sparkling rallies.
