HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

HONOURS TO COLTS.

NARROW MARGIN OVER KAIPAKI. HARD AND OPEN MATCH. By snatching victory In the last five minutes of their match with Kaipaki at Steele Park on Saturday, Colts took I the hockey -honours for the season. .They won the Killip Memorial Shield after a hard and even game with the runners-up by the narrow margin of one goal. The score was a good Indication of the trend of play for although at one period the country team were definitely on top, Colts made amends In the final stages and clinched l their win by superior work in the I circle. Kaipaki shared the territorial j honours with the winners, but their | indecisive circle play lost them several opportunities. tn the other senior fixture Aotea were ahead of Old Boys by 5 goals to 3 at the final whistle after a dull exhibition.

BY ONE GOAL.

OOLTB’ NARROW WINKAIPAKI’S STRONG BID. Fast and keen from the opening' bully to the. final whistle, the match between Colts and Kaipaki was a fitting conclusion to the championship competition, Colts scoring the winning and only goal of the match In the final stages of the game. At one stage the country team pressed vigorously, but they could make little Impression on Coils’ solid defence. Colts’ goal was a good one and came after a persistent attack. The teams were:—-Colts.—-McKinnon, Clark, Rockell, Badcock, Harvey, Badeley, Curtets, McKibhen, Perrett, Greaves, Wycherley. Kaipaki.—Goodwin, R. Bones, F. B'wd. Ferrell, C. Bones, Dunwoody, G. Boyd. Richardson, A. Boyd, Graham, Oddy. An early invasion (by Colts was 'T'neitiy slemmerl anrl G. Boyd In a fast run down the flank took the country team nut of danger. Kaipaki stormed the circle, hut, Harvey Intercepted a s,o 'v pass and cleared smartly, Badcork furthering the movement when he look I he hall to half-way. Goodwin came out and cleared con- ! ndriitly when Colts swept through the hist line, of defence. From the roll-in iiddv took the ball down the right Hank, but be was well held up hy IlarI'cy who sent the ball out at the halfI "ay mark. Kaipaki Attack. Colts’ goal was threatened when A Boyd Intercepted smartly and took (Play to the circle. A penalty corner gave Kaipaki a chance, hut Colts’ , stubborn defence held. The defenders. however, had a close call when a r shot from Graham’s stick narrowly j , ’Hissed the net. Good play by the full- ! ; hacks, Clark and Rockell, relieved! the pressure on the circle and then MoKlbbin led a fast attack downtleld, but F. Boyd checked the advance. Colts came again in a. brisk attack, McKfbbln loading the forwards down the side, but, R. Bones came across and ! tackled well. A subsequent free kick j enabled tho country team to clear to ! half-way where play centred for a ! period. Play was held up at this stage, ! Perrett receiving a nasty cut over the

eye a.nd having io leave the field. Play was still swinging up and down-field, the defence of both teams proving Impenetrable in the face of vigorous forward thrusts. Opportunity Missed. The country team had a golden opportunity when Richardson in a tricky run led the forwards to the circle, but unnecessary delay in shooting for the goal gave Colts time to clear. Then Colts carried everything before them In a fast rush down the centre, Curtels reaching the circle and making an attempt to goal. However, F. Boyd's tackling frustrated the movement and play again moved to mid-field. Colts had a chance following a corner, but the goaling shot was well stopped (by Kaipaki's centre-half, C. Bones, who, however, received a bad knock on the knee when the ball rose sharply off his stick. Goodwin moved out to the full-back position and Bones took his place in goal. Colts attacked again and from a melee on the fringe of the circle Harvey made a good attempt to goal, his shot hitting the side hoard. The winning goal came when, following a j corner, Greaves stopped for McKibbin I who shot a beautiful goal. Kaipaki tried hard to equalise, but Colts returned thrust for thrust, their defence holding until the final whistle, when the score was still I—o in their favour. The umpires were Messrs 11. \Y. Bennett, and F. Craig.
