SOLD STALE MILK.
SHOPKEEPER CONVICTED. . “ MUST PROTECT PUBLIC.” For selling mflk which failed on test to come up to the required standard for freshness, -Mrs. E. G. Shannon (Mr. P. H. Watts) was convicted and fined £ l and costs, with analyst’s fee, 10s 6d. by Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M. in the Magistrate’s Court, at Hamilton, to-day. “ When the public buy milk, they want it fresh, and they are entitled to get it fresh.” said (tie magistrate, in imposing the fine. “If the milk is stale, (hat is the retailer's misfortune. It appears to have been a real misfortune In tills ease, but the public must be protected.” Thomas Charles Thompson, healfh inspector, of Hamilton, stated that he had visited defendant’s shop and purchased a pint sample of milk. \ portion had been forwarded to Auckland for analysis, where i! had been found that it stood up to the reductase, test for only one and a-half hours instead of the three hours neeessnrv to comply with the regulations. Witness submitted the report of the analysis. To Mr. Walls, witness said that no Impropriety, other than the failure of the milk lo meet the standard, was suggested against defendant. What he had got was probably the previous morning’s milk. Defendant had gone ' to special trouble and 'expense in Installing a modern refrigerator in her shop, said Mr. Watts. The magistrate suggested that (he retailer might protect herself by some form of guarantee from the milk vendor.
