SHARP RISE

BEEF AT MORRINSVILLE. ALL CATTLE IN REQUEST. A sharp rise in values for beef was the feature of the weekly Morrinsville stock sale yesterday, the improved demand being particularly apparent for choice beef. A buoyant market was also experienced in other sections where average supplies were forward. A short supply of ox beef cleared readily at slightly Improved values, prime medium-weight steers changing hands at £l3 12s 6d. The market was animated for choice heifers, top lines selling from £lO to £l3 15s, with other good sorts being traded from £7 to £8 17s. Values for choice beef were easily the best obtained at the yards since last spring, while the market for plain and secondary beef also showed an improvement with values moving in vendors’ favour. The supply of good beef was larger than It has been for some weeks. Dairy cattle were again forward in large numbers with a fair proportion ; of inferior quality sorts. Bidding was i brisk from a large bench of buyers and 1 the market showed an improvement over last week, good heifers making to £l2 10s. Generally speaking, values were on a par with those being realised at other centres. Sheep and Pigs. The average fat sheep entry consisted mainly of hoggets, which proved in good demand at values that were on a par with late quotations. Best sorts sold from 32s Gd to 35s 'Gd. A small entry of wethers was eagerly sought and was not hard to quit at prices ranging to 365. Business was brisk for the several lines of breeding ewes that were forward, a line of 300 2-tooths meeting the market at 43s Gd. There were few really well-finished fat pigs available with the result that all prime pens were in keen request. One pen of baconers was auctioned for 975, the highest price realised at the yards for this elass for some years. Porkers likewise appreciated In value. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd. I Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report on the sale as follows: A medium yarding comprised mostly fat and fleshy cows and Jersey heifers, which sold under keen competition, the whole yarding changing hands. A pen of ten fat Polled Angus and Hereford heifers on account of Mr E. W. R. Leslie, of Putaruru, and purchased by the local butcher, Mr W. Timmins, realised £l3 15s. Extra prime fat Polled Angus and Hereford heifers made £l3 15s, heavy fat Jersey cows £8 to £8 10s, medium fat Shorthorn cows £6 17s Gd to £7 17s Gd, mediumweight fat Jersey heifers £6 5s to £7 17s Gd, fat Jersey cows £5 9s to £6 I ss, light fat Jersey cows £4 10s to £5 2s Gd, rough fat cows £4 4s to £4 15s, store Holstein cows £4 8s to £5 2s Gd, two-year empty Jersey heifers £4 2s Gd to £5, fair quality yearling Jersey heifers £3 14s to £5, potter bulls £6 2s Gd to £7 10s, service bulls £4. An average yarding of dairy cows and heifers was penned and a total clearance was effected at very satisfactory prices. Medium--sized average-conditioned springing Jersey heifers close to profit brought £8 5s to £8 10s, medium-quality Jerseycross springing heifers close to profit £7 5s to £7 15s, small Jersey-cross springing heifers £6 10s to £7 ss, more-backward sorts £5 to £5 10s, good-quality springing heifers £8 to £8 10s, Jersey-Shorthorn-cross springing heifers £7 to £7 10s. Only a moderate yarding of pigs came forward, comprising stores and weaners. Prices were on a par with recent quotations. Large good quality store pigs brought £2 Gs to £2 11s medium stores £2 to £2 4s, small ditto 33s to 38s, medium quality weancr-s 20s to 225. Farmers’ Auctioneering Company. A larger entry of fat sheep came forward and sold under keen comootion at recent values. Hoggets wer< also keenly sought, and realised satisfactory prices. A good yarding of o: beef comprised mostly prime light weight cattle. Competition was agali keen and values showed a sharp rls on last week’s sale. A lino of tei prime light steers on account o Messrs Kereone, Ltd., averaged £l3 12s Gd. A good yarding of cow and heifer beef. Including a good proportion of finished quality, sold at advanced rates, prices realised being the best for many years. A truck of prime medium fat heifers on account of Mr F. K. Thomas, Kereone, averaged £l3 10s, ono truck ex Mr Thomas Smith realised £lO 18s, 19 Polled Angus cows from Taneatua selling from £9 10s to £lO 4s. Second quality cows comprised mostly fat Jerseys, these also showing a considerable improvement, many realising from £7 to £9 12s Gd. Young store Jersey cows were keen In demand by graziers, whilst yearling and two-year heifers also firmed considerably. A full yarding of dairy cattle again came forward, the entry comprising chiefly heifers, the larger proportion being of better quality than last week. Competition throughout was particularly brisk and values for all classes were considerably in advance of recent sales. The top 1 price of the sale was for a particularly ehoice Jersey heifer which realised £l4 10s, whilst a truck of [ choice heifers from Mr K. li. Strawbridge, Kio Kin, averaged over £ll. ! Local heifers made from £l2 10s to £l3 ss. For a large yarding of fats competition was keen and prices realised were in advance of lain rates. One, pen of heavy baconers sold at £4 17s, this being the highest price realised in the Waikato for a number of years. A medium entry of stores met a ready sale at late market rates. The advertised line of pedigree Tam worth boars from Dr. 11. E. Annett, Matangi. also brought satisfactory prices, ranging from 3gns to 7Agns. A comparatively heavy entry of cattle, comprising several pens of choice medium to choice quality fat heifers and cows, a large yarding of unfinished and boner cows, a number of pens of yearling Jersey heifers and a few pens of two-year Jersey heifers came forward. The recently improved rates were obtained under keen competition rom a large bench of buyers. Boners and stores were also briskly sought and values Improved into line with the better quotations current. Yearling heifers also met with a keen market, and especially for some choice quality ones realisations were comparatively high. The advertised two-tooth ewes commanded brisk bidding. 100 sold at £2 3s Gd . and 199 at £2 3s. ! The entry of pigs was fair. They were mostly porkers. Both these and - storo pigs were keenly sought at . stable rates.
