BOMBARDMENT BEGINS.
ATTACK ON SHANGHAI. LARGE-SCALE ACTION LIKELY. ALLEGED MURDER OF SAILORS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, August 13. Despatches from Shanghai state that the Japanese have commenced a bombardment of parts of the Chinese city. Several big fires have started. The fighting seems fiercest along the old Shanghai-Woosung railway. Sporadic sniping occurred in other sectors. The Japanese appear to be preparing for a large-scale action. A battery of field guns has been brought up and tanks also are preparing to advance. A message from Tokio says the Japanese Foreign Ofilce, in a statement, ascribes the situation in China to the brutal murders of Japanese sailors on August 9, aggravated hv persistent provocations by the Chinese forces menacing t lie safety of the international settlement. General Chang Chih-chung has been appointed to the supreme command of the Chinese forces in the Shanghai and Nanking areas, according to a Shanghai message.
