GUEST LOSES LIFE. OVERCOME BY SMOKE. OLD LANDMARK DESTROYED(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) THAMES, Saturday. A fatal Are occurred early this morning when the Salutation Hotel, on the corner of Mary and Mackay Streets, was destroyed. About 16 were resident In th® hotel at the time, all except Mr Albert Fisher (67), married, having very narrow escapes. The building was owned by Mr F. A. Lacassie and the licensee was Mr W. Harper. Deceased, who was evidently overcome by dense smoke, worked for many years in the mines at Thames and lived until recently at Tararu. The building was an old landmark in the town and was erected over 60 years ago. The building and content* were insured but the amounts are not available.
