South Africa-New Zealand Duels RESUME OF RUGBY ENCOUNTERS. . THE HONOURS ARE STILL EVEN. The greatest Rugby battle In history, the duel for supremacy between the All Blacks of New Zealand and tho Springboks of South Africa, has extended over three decades and has yet to be decided, for In the 1921 series In the Dominion and the- 192 3 games in the Union the honours in the test matches were ail square. In 192 1 one test was won by either team and the final match was drawn, and the 192 8 contests resulted in each team gaining victory in two of the four tests. The battle resumes to-day in the first Test match of the 1937 series at Wellington. Three tests will be played. Car. tho battle for supremacy be decided this year? The following table sets out the details of the seven previous Test matches played between the two countries. Three were played during the 1921 Springboks tour of New Zealand and four when the All Blacks visited South Africa in 1928- The scores, together with th* tries, penalty goals, converted and field goals, are, shown:— THE 1921 SERIES. New Zealand. Springboks. converted, 3 penalties and two potted goals) to 39 points (5 tries, 2 converted, 3 penalties and 2 potted goals). •This score Includes one goal from a mark. The Springboks during their 1921 tour of New Zealand played a total of 19 matches, winning 15, drawing 2, losing 2 and scoring 214 points, and having 81 points scored against them. The All Blacks, when they toured South Africa in 1928, played 22 matches altogether and won 16, drew 1, lost 5, scored 339 points and had 144 scored against them. It is interesting to note that when the Australian Wallabies toured South Africa last year the Test match tally was:— South Africa won 3 and Australia 2 matches, scoring 50 points (9 tries, 3 goals, 3 penalties and 2 field goals) to 42 (8 tries, 4 goals, 2 penalties and 1 field goal). Scored Against Springboks. The following table has been compiled to show the All Black players who have scored against the Springboks in Test matches played either in 19*21 or 1928. Tho famous All Black, M. F. Nicholls, has run up the most points, but it is interesting to note that, he never scored a try against the Springboks. Although Nicholls scored only 16 points against the South Africans he scored a total of 94 points In Test matches during his career with the All Black jersey. The table is as follows: M. F. Nicholls (192 1) M. F. Nicholls ( 1928) E. A. Beilis (1921) .. .1. Steel 1921) P. W. Storev (1921) A. L. MrLean ' 1921) I*. F. Lindsay 1928) W. A. Strang ( 1928'. R. T. Stewart (1928) B. A. Grenside. T 3 ,+ , ew ea^an d and South Africa each sent three teams to Great Britain, and Australia sent two. Perhaps the greatest of all these were the first All Blacks In 1905-6. On their three tours collectively, the South Africans appear to have risen to heights perhaps as elevated as the All Blacks, notwithstanding that the 192 4 New Zealanders were undefeated. The last team from the Dominion was not so powerful as the others. Tho Springboks have a slightly better record In internationals against Homeland teams than the All Blacks, but they have not toured the Isles since 1931 and Rugby in England has Improved considerably since then. They played 12 matches, to win 10, draw 1 and lose 1. The New Zealanders had 11 matches, to lose 3 and win 8. The Australians on their two tours won and lost three internationals. The Springboks’ only Test defeat was inflicted by Scotland on Paul Roos’ men in 1906 by 6 points to nil, though they drew the same year with England. They defeated Wales and Ireland In every Test.
