With the approach of tho Pakuranga Hunt at Ellerslie next week local i trainers are now commencing to send their charges along and there was some interesting work performed during the week. Miss Clipper. The four-year-old Raceful mare, out of a full-sister to Matinee, has j been called Miss Clipper. She is making good progress under A. P. ! Brady’s tuition. Riding at Pakuranga. C. Tilsley has been engaged to ride Solomon in his engagement at the Pakuranga Hunt. This member of the A. C. Jones’ stable has been striding along freely in his work at headquarters and should strip well when he goes into the starter’s hands. Good Stakes. The smallest stake at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting will be £3OO, and at the summer meeting the minimum will be £350. Red Sun. Red Sun worked well on Saturday morning, but a recurrence of lameness followed and he did not appear at the National meeting. Second Australian Win. Aero King gained his second success in Australia a few days ago at Moorefield. He showed promising form at Ellerslie and Avondale prior to his departure, and on the latter course in April he ran second to Airam in the Oakley Handicap. Origin of Steeplechase. In early days in England, hunting men raced across country, the steeple of the church in an adjoining village, the outstanding landmark, being their objective. It was a chase for the .steeple. A Distance. Years ago, in the days of heat racing, a flag was erected at the distance, 240 yards from the winning post. If a horse failed to be inside that mark in any heat, he was "distanced,” and therefore ineligible to run in the subsequent heats. A Big Team. The largest team in training at Ellerslie for the new season is that of R. S. Bagby, who has nine horses in active work. His string comprises Lord Val, King Neptune, Privy Seal, Hot Shot, Glen Abb, Stretto, Rainier, Royal Abb and Fidelis. Royal Appellant Well. Although he has not been required to do anything serious in recent weeks Royal Appellant is looking bright and > muscular and he should be capable of a solid effort when next raced. Royal Appellant is a capable performer up to a mile and a-quarter and should do | further good service for his owner this season. Related to Pink Coat, Singing Gold, which ran second to ,Ihu at the Poverty Bay meeting recently and second again to Gay Mimic it the Hunt meeting at Gisborne, is i three-quarter sister to Pink Coat, oeing a daughter of Hunting Song and Brown Edna, which is a half-sister by Cynic to Pink Coat’s dam Red Edna. Now a four-year-old, Singing Gold has done very little racing so is \ likely early improver. Betting at Egmont. “ I am sure that the win-and-place system has served its time,” said Mr . C. Tonks at the annual meeting of he Egmont Racing Club held at llawera on Thursday night. “ Ido not think that the system is suitable for .country clubs and I think that the ‘committee will revert to the 75-25 syseni for the February meeing anyhow to see how it shapes. During the •slump the win-and-place system served its purpose.” At a later stage the meeting passed a resolution recommending the incoming committee ;•> revert to the single pool. A I.ikclv Sort. Skyway, which scored a double wir ‘it. Gisborne, has been entered fo both the hack distance event am Ladies’ Bracelet, at the Pakurang; Hunt meeting. Tho fields he dofcatci on Saturday were very ordinary, bu ho won well and the class he is likeh to meet in the hurdlers* event a Ellerslie is hardlv likely to he anbetter if as good. ] For Waverley. Silvanus, which is at present being ! worked by her owner, Mr J. C. BubI litz, at Hawera, is likely to join up i with G. A. Reid’s team at Waverley lin the near future. Although she i* mw a six-year-old, this daughter of Nigger Minstrel and the speedy Airway has done very little racing, but is a smart galloper when at her best. Record in Stake Distribution. The Ascot (England) Coronation meeting last month set a record in the distribution of stakes. For the four days, the aggregate was £81,695, which beat the previous best for the meeting, £79,850, in 1931. The amount j added by the Racing Executive, 1 £46,700, was £2250 more than in j 1956. Owners, therefore, contributed £34,995, a huge proportion when comj pared with conditions in Australia . and New Zealand* I Photographing Finishes. | At most of the leading French courses the photographing of finishes is being adopted. It has been long in use at Le Tremblay, and was recently i tried at St. Cloud. At Le Tremblay { it has been extended to bring in the i fourth horse, as well as the placeI getters. In America most courses of importance now have their photo- . graphic equipment.

Team for Australia. F. Davis is likely to leave at the end of the month with his team for Australia, although a definite date has not yet been announced. In addition to Courtcraft and Francis Drake, Davis will take across Aiwai and the two-year-old Homily, but it is not considered that Coronation (LimondJewel of Asia) will now make the trip as he is not sufficiently forward Courtcraft and Francis Drake again galloped over a mile at Wanganui on Saturday morning, covering the distance in 1.48, the last seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5. They finished on terms with both going well. Homily was also galloped, sprinting three furlongs attractively in 40sec. Aiwai galloped well over six furlongs with Scarf Dance in 1.20
