WOMEN’S DIVISION.
SOUTH AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL. The South Auckland provincial quarterly meeting was held in the Parish Hall, Te Awamutu, on August 5, the provincial president, Mrs Ryburn, presiding. Delegates were present from the following branches: Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Ngahinapouri. 'l\awhia, Ohaupo, Hamilton. Korakonul and Karakariki. Apologies were received from Miss Marshall (Cambridge). Mrs Clements and Dr. de la Mare (Hamilton), Mrs Pegler (Rag- , Ian"), and Mrs "Worthington (Te Awamutu). The president welcomed all members and expressed sympathy with Mrs Empson, president of the Ngaruawahia branch of the Division, and Mrs Ward Chapman, president of the Waikato Federation of Women's Institutes), in their recent bereavements. Mrs Ryburn expressed appreciation to the many who had both personally and by letter offered her congratulations on being one of the recipients of a Coronation Medal, and felt the honour which merited the gift was through the co-operation of branch members. She also appealed to members to bring any problems to provincial meetings so that all could be solved for the efficient working of the organisation. Mrs W. Godfrey read Mrs C. K. Wilson's last presidential address as Dominion president. Discussion followed regarding the proposed housekeeping scheme which it is hoped will alleviate this particular work at headquarters and enable the membership to be increased. The committee appointed to formulate details for this scheme were Mesdames Ryburn, Cooper, Clements, Godfrey and Jenkinson. A commission fo inquire Into maternity services in Hamilton will meet on September 1 fi, Mesdames Scott (NguImini), Gould (Ngamma) and Reyi nolds (Raglan), reporting rases from j isolated districts. Reports of t?i c* housekeeping quarI forly period were given by Mrs Ry- ! burn (provincial), Miss Kyre ( i’e j Awamutu) and Mrs Windsor* Hamilton). and in submitting those reports the urgent need for more housekeepers to fin positions required was stressed. Mrs Gould (Xgaroma) spoke advocating the need of a rest room in Te Awamutu. She quoted cases of inconvenience lo those visiting Te Awamutu on business from outlying j districts, and briefly outlined a flnan- | cial proposition- Mesdames Ryburn. Neill and Godfrey were elected to confer with the Mayor of Te Awamutu and the Chamber of Commerce as to thp procedure of such a project and for their help and advice. Time did not permit Mrs Ryburn to deal with conference business, but those branches who wished for a report of conference she would be willing to visit. Mrs Mclntosh, who accompanied Mrs Ryburn at conference in Wellinglon. briefly mentioned Hie discussions and decisions of some of the remits | forwarded. Mrs Mclntosh paid a high I tribute to Mrs Ryburn, who was ! I elected to the Dominion Advisory 1 Roard, and said how much her capabilities in office were valued. The meeting closed with the usual votes of thanks. Luncheon and afternoon tea were •' served by some members of the Te Awamutu branch under the supervision of Mesdames G. Lawry and \ Bryant. WAIKATO EAST EXECUTIVE. The quarterly meeting of the Waikato East Provincial Executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at Waotu recently. There was an excellent attendance, delegates being present from Reparoa, Ngakura, Tekoroa, Putaruru and. Waotu. Mrs A. Sloper (Tokoroa) presided. Apologies were received for absence from Tlrau and Matamata branches. Mrs Sloper reported that 20 positions had been filled by Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union housekeepers during the past quarter. An encouraging sign of better times had been shown by the fact that employers had been able to pay all or nearly all the housekeeper’s salary. It was reported from headquarters that more than iflOO positions had now been filled by Women’s Division housekeepers. This went to show that domestic help was urgently required in the country. A statement was made “ That in two years’ time housing schemes would be finished In the towns and that then the I Government would turn Its attention to homes for sharcmilkers and farm ' workers.” In regard to the remit referring to I the poor quality of flour, members generally reported that flour was improving. A talk on health matters was given and afternoon tea was served by the members of the Waotu branch. * PUTARURU BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Putaruru branch of the Women's Division was held In the club rooms on Mon- | day. Mrs P. F. Karl presiding over a very good attendance of members. be done about the drinking of liquor at dances, and it was decided to communicate with the president of the Women’s Division and other prominent workers of social welfare movements concerning this evil. The gardening circle members’ competition for next meeting will be a vase of spring flowers, and the general division competition for next 1 meeting will be the best birthday gift costing not more than Is 6d. 'September 6 was agreed upon as the date of that month's meeting. Mrs Sloper (Tokoroa), the president of the East Waikato Provincial Council and who has recently returned from the Women's Division conference in \\ ellington. gave a most enjoyable and interesting talk on her trip and experiences at the conference. Ihe speaker described the railway station, particularly its nursery where mothers may leave their children while shopping. The Division now has 515 branches with 17,000 members. There are 391 housekeepers employed by the Division throughout the year. Mrs Sloper was heartily thanked for her address by the president and members. file hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. E. Duxfleld, P. D. Morrison, E. .lories, F. Dodd. TE MATA BRANCH. The last meeting of flic To Mata branch of llie W omen's Division was held recently when there was a good attendance. The meeting opened with the .National Anthem, followed by the creed. Correspondence was then dealt with and arrangements were put in hand for the entertainment to be given on August 17 by the "Black and White Dandies,” or Hamilton. In the Te Mala Nad, half of the proceeds of which will g., to the Te Mata branch or the Division. An appeal was read for donations or parcels for Christmas cheer tor the lepers on Makogai i Island, and a donation will b e sent forward. 'I he president then gave a brief re- I port of the conference held in Well- I ington. It was suggested that nlore | information could be given at the next meeting, as there was Insufficient time to complete the report. The competition, burled flowers was won by Mrs .V 11.
