About Picture People . FROM FILM WEEKLY. Ronald Colman will star for pro-ducer-director Tay Garnett In “ Trade Winds." This will be the firstborn ol the new Tay Garnett-John Ford-Les-ter Cowan production company. Garnett has a long start over those producers who are “ all ready to go If only thev could find a story.” “ Trade Winds ” has been in his hands for over a year. He shot backgrounds for every sequence of It during that famous cruise on his own yacht “ Athene.” So the picture should be in the can almost as quickly as a quickie. And after that Garnett has two more in hand, for which he took backgrounds on the same trip, “ World Cruise ” and “ Singapore Bound " Originally Colman’s character in “ Trade Winds" was a “ conceited American detective." Garnett's first casting choice being Lee Tracy, seems it may be somewhat altered. Modest or conceited. Colman will play a detective who follows a beautiful murdress around the world, taking Honolulu, Japan, Shanghai, Cey--1 ion and Cairo In his stride. It should be good to see Colman In a down-to-earth-or-water modern story, after his triple dose of 60romantic heroics. Latest instance of Colman chivalry; dispensing bales of roses from his garden to audiences of “ Lost Horizon ” on Mother's Day. Gail Patrick, stepping out since her success In “ My Man Godfrey," gets the lead in " Spawn of the North.” Part was originally slated for Carole Lombard, and the whole production held up last year because of Carole’s illness. Gail made suoh a good contrast to Carole they’ve given her the part. Hollywood loglo. Picture Is the Teohnicolour salmon eplo. Heroes are he-men Randolph Scott and Charles Bickford. Perhaps Gall’s odd decoration of her home suggested her for the part. She’s got a fish-pond In the middle of her library. Anyway, she’s worked long and hard for stardom, and I hope it’s coming to her. Errol Flynn’s hopes reached a Hollywood high at Marlon Davies’ latest party, when Norma Shearer asked him how he’d feel about playing Darcy to her Elizabeth in “ Pride and Prejudice.” Seems Norma may make the Austen classic before “ Marie Antoinette ” after all. Warners have pictures waiting for Flynn; Specimen," a new version ot “ Robin Hood," and “ The Gamblers.” a slab of Dostoievsky for Flynn. Bette Davis, Edward G. Robinson and Basil Rathbone. But they might feel Induced to loan Flynn, because Norma Is promised to Warners for one picture. Let alone the honour and glory of playing opposite Miss Shearer. Might be a good idea, too, for Flynn to come indoors out of those blood and thunder open spaces and high seas. We’ve had no chance to see what he con do in a drawing-room, ancient or modern. At least physically (and that Includes vocally) he’s more suited to play Jane Austen’s Immaculate aristocrat than Clarke Gable, the first surprising announcee for Darcy. Clark should be happier in ** The Great Canadian." bought for him by M-G-M. It’s all about a hockeyplayer. George Arliss keeps his lips politically sealed over the prospects of returning to Hollywood. Hollywood, however. Is already busy with rumours about stories he might make there in the autumn. Both possibles mentioned would take their place In Mr Arliss’ gallery of Jews. First is a story about Hvam Solomon, Jewish banker, who financed George Washington. Second alternative is a screen biography of Lord Reading. Nothing settled yet. And, of course, Mr Arliss may just go and bask in the Californian sun. He could well afford to, having amassed quite a tidy fortune. Frances Drake is making a third bid for stardom Remember, she’s the American girl who came to England so young she had to learn American all over again when she went to Hollywood. She stood out a mllo in her early Hollywood films. I'sually played those mean other other women, and in pictures like “Forsaking All Others,” stole more than a siren’s share of the honours. Yf*t her chances, first with Paramount. then with Twentieth Century, have grown increasingly imperceptible. Now Columbia, has bouchf up her contract. Convinced she has all stardom takes, ho will spare no pa’ns to build her up. I think thev may be right. Ginger nosers has got fo waif for her solo starring vehicle. “Vivacious Lady,” which was all ready to start. Janies Stewart’s Illness held up production, so Ginger gets husv sharing honours with Katharine Hepburn and Burgess Mcrodlili in “Stage Door.” Meanwhile. Fred Asfaire gets Ginger's director. George Stevens, for •* \ Damsel in Distress.” and Ginger will have to test her patience for at least four months before “ Vivacious Lady” is brought out again. FL l SHFS. PARAMOUNT an Ig £3OO for George Ado's old "Si wash College" stories, to stiir Burns and Allen. Wallace Beery and Gloria Swanson made an Ado scries in the old Essannv days \V\YNE MORRIS, blonde hero of George Brent part in “ Submarine *C»2.” The picture gives Ruby Keeler her first straight dramatic part. Brent goes to “ Gold is Where You Find It,”
