COUNCIL GRANTS £25.
LOSS ON BAND CONTEST. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY HELPED. In a letter from the South Auckland Caledonian Society, received at last evening’s meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council, the council was reminded of its offer of a contribution up to £25 to the society if the latter body should find itself suffering financial loss as a result of the staging of the North Island pipe-band contest at Hamilton last Easter. The society forwarded a copy of the audited balance sheet of the contest, showing a loss of £95 Is sd, but it was pointed out in the accompanying letter that on the debit side the Rem band prizes £7O, represented the winnings of the society’s own band. On the credit side of the balance sheet, however, entry fees included £5 5s paid by the society. The actual loss was therefore £3O 6s 6d, and the society stated that the Ngaruawahiai Be'gatta Association had already forwarded £5 6s sd, so that the contribution of £25 by the council would wipe out the loss. It was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, that tlie contribution of £25 be made to the society. “The society were unfortunate in Ihe weather for the contest,” he said, “but they put up a v-ry good show.”
