With over 12,000 troops standing at the out vive to crush any incipien disorders, British High Commissioner Sir Arthur Wauchope (second from left below) and his associates charged with the task of governing Palestine, awaited reaction of the million-odd Arabs and 400,000 Jews to publication of proposals to divide the Holy Land Into three zones and set up separate and independent states for Jews and Arabs. The proposals, already approved by the British Government were put forward by the Royal Comission which was sent to investigate recurring disorders between the two bitterly opposed factions and to suggest a remedy. Under the partition, a Jewish state will be set up in the north and west, approximately onethird of the country, while Arabs own the remainder of Palestine with the exception of a narrow corridor, including Jerusalem which Britain will retain under mandate. Map shows the partition, the Jewish area marked by single lines; the Arab by double lines and the British corridor in black. Opposition is expected from Jews and Arabs, the latter led by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (lower left); Nationalist aspirations of the Moslem Arabs which have led to bloody riots in the past, are whipped up by orators like the one in circle addressing a street corner crowd at Jaffa. Both this city and Tel Aviv, the modem and completely Jewish city over which the British fighting aeroplanes is flying at right, will be included in the new Jewish state. The Royal Commission Indicated that they held out no alternative hope of reconciling the two races.
