ESSEX EASILY BEATEN. DOMINION BOWLERB ON TOP. COWIE’S EXCELLENT FIGURES. (From the Special Correspondent of the U.P.A. with the team.) (Received August 11, 3.15 p.m.) CHELMSFORD, August 10. The New Zealand cricketers achieved their fifth succes-s over a first-class county, when they defeated Essex by four wickets at Chelmsford to-day. In their first innings the county made 256. The visitors replied with 368 and yesterday Essex had lost four wickets for 109 runs. This morning the county carried their total to 239, leaving New Zealand to get 128 runs for a win. Six wickets were down, when they had the required number. Cowie, bowling with good pace and considerable life, enabled the tourists to dismiss the last six county batsmen before lunch. The fast bowler’s morning figures were 18 overs, five maidens, 31 runs, and four wickets. Page and Lamason took good catches in the slips. New Zealand lost four wickets quickly, but won easily. Nichols again bowled as well as any fast medium bowler met on the tour so far. Smith was troublesome with the new ball, and Evans took two wickets in bis first over. Wallace and Weir Bat Well. Wallace batted nearly an hour, and Weir played an excellent innings, driving strongly and placing the ball well

on the leg side. His half-century took 75 r '-'utes. He hit six fours.

Robins was X-rayed following a blow on the body from a no ball from Cover on the Oval yesterday. The injury is not serious. He suffered bruising and slight muscle strain, but is expected to be fit for the third Test against New Zealand.
