Chinese Raise Money.—About £lO,000 has been collected by Chinese in -\ew Zealand, who number between - *>oo and 3000 lor their country in ? the event of war on a large scale. There is no suggestion, from information forwarded to .New Zealand, that volunteers will be sought outside China, and it was explained by Chinese iti Auckland that there was no ; compulsion on Chinese subjects livingin other countries to return to China in the event of an-outbreak of serious hostilities. It, was not man power that China needed, it was stated, as within the country there were more men than were needed to defend their i. land.
