KNEEBONE’S ROAD

IMPROVEMENT ASKED FOR. RE-FORMATION AND METALLING. A re’quest from settlers on Kneebone’s (Road, on the north side of the Mangawara River, at Orinl, for the reformation and remetalling of the road was received at the meeting of the Waikato County Council yesterday. With the request there was forward ed to the council a contribution toward the cost of the work, amounting to £75, made by settlers In the locality, who suggested that advantage might be taken by the council of the Government's offe'r to subsidise wages to the extent of £4 a week to each man employed for four months. Explaining the position, the countyengineer, Mr A. A. Woodward, said the road was 204 chains long, and the area was full of tree stumps. The ldtfal way of dealing with these In re-forming the road was to employ a tractor. That method, however, would prove very expensive. If men weTe employed, on the other hand, the council would have to pay for their transport to and from the road, or, alternatively, erect huts for them on the site of the work. These would cost about £3O each. Quarry Available. Mr Woodward also pointed out, however, that there was a metal quarry near the road and if access to it were secured, it would prove a valuable asset to the county, providing good metal for the roads in that district. The county clerk, Mr G. F. E. Barton reported that several settlers Interested in the reforming of Kneebones’ Road were in arrears in respect to rates, the Individual sums running up to as much as over £IOO, while the total outstanding was in the vicinity of £3OO. If these were paid it would be easier for the' council to accede to the settlers’ request. It was decided to ask Mr Woodward to bring down a report on the cost of improving the road and opening up the quarry, and to Inform the settlers that their contribution toward the cost of improving the' road had been accepted, but that the oouncil would hold the money until a grant from the Government could he obtained. It was also decided to advise settlers that the payment of rates outstanding would greatly ease the situation and assist in the meeting of their request.
