RACING REVENUE.
BIG WAIKATO TURNOVER. A SUBSTANTIAL RECOVERY. TOTALIZATOR HANDLES £214,236. The recovery of racing revenue that has been noted almost without interruption throughout the season in all parts of the Dominion has found its apex, in every class of meeting, in the Auckland Province. The general trend has been noted, but particular instances bring out even more clearly the dominant position which this part of the country holds in the galloping sport. On the 52 days or racing held, in the Auckland district there were 396 races decided. Stakes, with the value of trophies and sweepstakes, amounted to £94,571, yielding an average prize of nearly £239. Similarly, the totalisator turnover of £1,677,000 showed a mean investment of £4235 a race. These returns are vastly better than any other district can show. Among metropolitan clubs the Auckland Racing Club offered £38,000 in stakes and trophies, compared with £29,350 given by the Canterbury Jockey Club, £15,000 by the Dunedin Jockey Club and £34,050 by the Wellington Racing Club. The Auckland and Wellington clubs raced on 11 days, the Dunedin club on nine and the Canterbury club on 10 days. Clubs with six days’ racing are easily led by the Waikato Raolng Club, which aohleved an aggregate totalisator turnover of £214,236. The average stake was £248, and tne average investment £4463. With four days in Its own behalf the Avondale Jockey Club retained the premiership in its present grade, giving prize-money amounting to £6504, and showing a tote return of £116,310 —an average stake of £203 and a pool of £3635. In the far north, with four days, the Whangarei Racing Club’s stakes amounted to £3720 and the totalisator to £55,300, compared with Takapuna’s £7050 and £111.89-6. These are the three four-day clubs in the province. Te Aroha’s Achievement. With its two days, the Te Aroha Jockey Club had a very fine meeting that set a standard no other similarlyplaced club could approach. Stakes
were worth £5295, giving an average of £331, while the investments, at £91,659, gave an average pool of £5729, which may fairly be compared with Ellerslies £7037 a race from £598,128. Among one-day gatherings, that of the Franklin Racing Club held pride of place. For its eight races it gave purses valued at £ISOO and the totalisator amounted to £41,886, an outlay of £lB7 for £5236 in betting.
