PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Mrs C. K. Wilson, 0.8. E., presided at the quarterly meeting of the Provincial Council of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The following were the (branch representatives present: Otorohanga, Mesdames J. C. Peterson, Pye and Horneman; Pio Pio, Mesdames Batley and Smith; Pururu, Mesdames Sungren and Stretch; Te Anga, Mrs Gordon; Waimiha, Mrs Parke; Aria, Mesdames Thompson and Calvent; Kaeaea, Mrs Kiddle. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames C. Irvine (Otorohanga), Milne (Te Anga), and Cullen (Pio Pio branch secretary). Conference matters were the principal business transacted. In answer to questions Mrs Wilson stated that the Government had done nothing, so far, with regard to the State taking over the housekeeping scheme covering maternity cases. The community chest would be available for looking after needy and necessitous cases among members in the first instance. It was decided that branch representation at inter-provincial council will remain as formerly . A comprehensive report by Mrs Cullen, delegate to the conference, was read bv the president. The secretary of the housekeeping department, Mrs W. A. Lee (Waitomo Caves) detailed her report, showing what help had been extended to country famines. This showed that 3391 housekeeping positions had been filled throughout the Dominion during the past year. Mrs W ilson explained that it was by special request that she had given her opening addresss at the Dominion conference on July 14. Elocutionary and musical items by Mesdames Horneman (Otorohanga), Sutherland and Barlow, were much appreciated. HAMILTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Hamilton branch of the Women’s Division was held in the Y.M.C.A.-Y.W.C.A. rooms yesterday, Mr* A. J. Clements presiding over a very large attendance. After the reading of the Creed a vote of sympathy was passed by the meeting to Mrs J. Ward Chapman in the loss of her mother. Among those present were Mrs W. Godfrey (provincial organiser), Mrs F. J. B. Ityburn (provincial president), and Mrs Seymour (president of the Ohaupo branch). A collection was taken for the furnishings of the new isolation ward at “ The Nest.” and a vote of thanks was passed to the Te Kowhai branch of the Farmers’ Union for their assistance to the branch of the Women’s Division in a recent social function. Congratulations were extended by the meeting to Mrs Rvburn on her election to the Dominion Advisory Board. Addresses on Dominion conference were given by both Mrs Ryburn and Mrs Godfrey. A detailed report on conference was given by both the branch’s delegates. Mrs A. J. Clements and Mrs H. Windsor (Tamahcro). A dressmaking demonstration, which was most interesting and instructive. was given by demonstrators from Druleigh College and much
appreciated. The hostesses were Mesdames Brown, Bath, Phair and Wainwright. NGARUA BRANCH. About 30 members were present at the July meeting of the Ngarua branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, held in the local hall recently. The president, Mrs S. C. Carter, occupied the chair. After the general discussion Mrs A. Donovan, who recently returned from the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Conference in Wellington. gave a very interesting and full report on the proceedings. The competitions for the month were for the best assorted small cakes, and tlie best darn in a stocking, the former being won by Mrs B kett. with Mrs J. Scott second, and the latter by Mrs \V. Body, and Mrs J. Scott second. The afternoon tea competition was won by Miss Luxton. The sales table did excellent business during the ! the afternoon. It was decided to hold a social afternoon for the August meeting with *io ; competitions. A very enjoyable afternoon closed with tea served by the Mrs and Miss Luxton.
