Baker Nocturnus won the Grand National of 1937 in dashing style. The big rross-countrv event lacked little or the thrilling incident associated with the gruelling three and ahair mile Journey and only two. the winner and Shillelagh Wood, completed the course without mishap. Over the last mile the Waikato horse, Irish Comet appeared to be travelling smoothly under a nice hold and It was thought at this stage that be would be dilllcult to dispose of However, It was as he was moving up to challenge N'octurnus at the second to last Tence that he made a faulty Jump and crashed, being subsequently remounted to finish third well down the straight. Once the Tavourite was out of the contest N'octurnus went on to win very easily Trcin Shillelagh Wood, whose good* Jumping proved an important r&clor in his meritorious exhibition. Nocturnus, who Is by Night Raid Trom the Trumpeter mare, Victory Lass. la eight-years-old and Is owned by Mr A. V. Roberts, or Kaltuna. He began racing as a three-year-old and to-day’s race was his thirty-ninth. In his engagement in the Ilomeby Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt he has filled the role of runner-up to Cock o’ the North, who, to-day. was going well in front when he came down at Cull.-’ the last time round. Roy?; Limoni! ran ofT early In the proceedings and was later remounted to complete the course behind the placed division. Pahu v.as pulled up. Forest Glow fell at also did brlgadore with a round to go. anti the latter slightly Interfered with Shlllelagn Wood. The next to go was Cock o’ the North and soon after he fell Burglar commenced U u. - j.nd drop back. Perhaps the biggest thrill or the contest, howevec. came when the straight-out ravourlte Irish Comet railed to take the second to last Tence and crashed to leave N'OC* turnus In an unassailable position.
