DUKE MURDERED.

CRIME NEAR MADRID. CARRIED OFF AND SHOT. AGED SPANISH NOBLEMAN’S FATE. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, August 9. The Milan correspondent of the Times says the story of the murder near Madrid some time ago of Cristobal Colon, the aged Duke of Veragua. last descendant of Christopher Columbus. is now revealed. The Duke did not meddle in politics, and therefore the former Foreign Minister, Senor del Vavo, assured the Ambassadors from Chile and Argentina, who regarded him as a sacred figure, that he was perfectly safe. One of the Duke's dependants, Ramirez el Cojo, self-appointed leader of a marauding band, broke into the palace and carried off the Duke with the Marquis Aguila Fuente. The Ambassadors vainly enlisted the aid of Senor del Vayo. Eventually, the Argentine Ambassador’s typist ascertained that the Duke and the MarqulS were prisoners at the former convent of San Domestlco. The Government gave the Ambassadors an order for their release. El Cojo told them to return next day. Meanwhile, pretending that it would save his life, El Cojo compelled the Duke to sign a will bequeathing to him his estate. El Cojo then bundled the Duke and the Marquis into a motorcar and shot both of them dead in the forest of Bosco del Pardo.
