BOBBY CALF KILLINGS.
SEASON REACHES ITB PEAK. J OVER 15,000 aI WEEK. With the new dairy season now well \ under way the hobby calf trade is 1 reaching its peak. At the Horotiu 1 works killings of between 15,000 and 16, n0n a week are being made and it is expected that the largest single weekly tally will be reached next week when the works will handle at least 16,000 head. Calves have come forward ■slightly earlier this year probably owing to the fact that grass growth has been well maintained throughout Ihe w inter and temperatures have, on the whole, been mild. There appears to be no appreciable difference between the aggregate killings of hobby calves at Horotiu ti dale as compared with last year, but this can probably bo accounted for by the number of farmers who have gone over to sheep owing to the farm < labour shortage or view of the present buoyant demand in the wool and fat lamb trades.
