Play in the men’s hockey championship of Australia was begun at the Sports Ground, Sydney, to-day in ideal weather. Ten teams, representing all the States and New Zealand, are taking part. The visiting teams, including the New Zealanders, were' given a civic reoeption this morning. New Zealand’s first game will bo against New South Wales to-morrow. To-day’s matches resulted as follows: —Tasmania drew with We'stern Australia, 2-all; Queensland defeated Victoria, ljy 4 goals to 1; New South Wales defeated South Australia by 4 goals to 0.
