UNION FEES STOLEN
YOUNG LABOURER’S LAPSE. BLAMED DRINK AND GAMBLING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Friday. Pleading guilty on two charges of theft involving in all £34, the property of the Wellington Timber Yards and Sawmillers’ Union, Francis Murray Boggs (28), labourer, was ordered by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., to come up for sentence If called upon within twelve months on condition that he takes out a prohibition order and makes restitution. Detective-Sergeant Meiklejohn said accused was employed at a local timber mill and had been appointed by the union as a collector of dues. Towards the end of 1936 the payments were not made regularly and accused had admitted spending the money when taxed by the union secretary. Accused blamed drink and gambling for his lapse.
