HAMILTON HARRIERS

LAST SATURDAY’S RUN. DIFFIOULT SIX-MILE OOURBE. (By “Stamina.”) The trail over whloh the Hamilton Barrier Cluh oonduoted its weekly run last Saturday afternoon was by no means an easy one, ooverlng six miles of hills and swamps with a solid mile of road work to finish up with. The Hillorest School was the startingpoint, and difficulties, were first en - countered In Hinton’s Gully, where a creek had to be or-is-sed and several steep lnollnes negotiated. These were followed by three-quarters of a mile of road, leading on to the familiar Ruakura course, and striking a swamp into which the majority of the runners, at one stage or another, managed to fall. After crossing several paddocks of the Stats Farm, the paper led into Hillcrest Road and thence on to the Cambridge main highway and home. Twenty members faoed the starter and were divided Into two paoks. Bloore and H. Thompson were the outstanding performers in the slower division, and fought out a stern tussle over the last quarter-mile, the former Just prevailing. Alan has been able to get a few more runs In of late, and can hurry things along when he likes. Thompson's form throughout the season has been consistent, and he can always finish weLL An Exoftlng Finish. One of the most exciting finishes seen for some time was witnessed when the fast pack rounded the bend for home. R. Gardner, Irwin and Crabb were together in the lead at this stage, and after an outstanding sprint Gardner defeated Irwin by lnche-s, while Crabb was not more than two yards away in third position. Others who performed pleasingly were A. Gardner and Armstrong, but they lacked the stamina of the first three over the final half-mile. By the time this goes to press the senior olub championship will have been decided, and it will be interesting to note howthe plaoings compare with the result of the run-in last Saturday. There is no doubt that Ron Gardner Is a reliable performer. He seems able to suit himself to any type of going, always fenoes well, and is never without a sprint at the finish. If he strikes his best form next Saturday, he will trouble many of Aucklanders in the Provincial Championship event, in whloh he oompeted prominently last year. The Hamilton -Club will be providing at least tvto teams In this event, and will probably take a party of supporters through as well. The teams will be announced after to-day’s championship event, and indications are that they will uphold the prestige of their club In the big provincial gathering.
