RECORD BREAKERS.
HIGH PRODUCING GRADES. BAY OF PLENTY JERSEYS. Mildred, Lizzie and Kitty, are three grade cows In the herd of Mr. W. J. Murray, of Otaklri, Whakatane, that ire making grade history. Mildred, the top producer of this phenomenal trio, olds fair to break the world’s record for both pedigrees and grades. Already with 11991 b. fat in 355 days she has smashed the world’s grade record. Lizzie ,has a record of 9961 b. of fat in 329 days, while Kitty has 8111 b. fat in 290 days to her credit. Mildred’s dam was by a bull that Mr. Murray had been using In his grade herd in Opotfki before coming to Otaklri. Mr. Murray says that he had a mixture of some of the old strains of Jersey that were used about Auckland In the early days. Mildred’s slre, however, is the •C. 8.8. bull, Rosalind’s Squire. It is ap interesting fact that a full sister of Mildred’s gave 4301 b. fat under G.H.T. when a 2-year-old when she was running in a big herd and without the benefit of any special feed. Mildred herself has had the best pasture possible throughout the season and she has been fed concentrates all the time. Lizzie was fed concentrates slnoe about two months after calving, but Kitty has had no concentrates at all. However, the latter had in addition to grass soft turnips and also a few carrots for a period. Details of Concentrates. The concentrates were as follows: —Bran, 21b.; linseed meal, Jib.; orushed oats, Jib.; maize meal, Jib. In the morning half a pound: of boiled barley was fed in addition. This mixture was moistened with molasses and water and fed night and morning (barley in the mornings only). If the cow did not clean up all the feed she was not given any the following milking, and perhaps not for several milkings after. All three cows were machine milked twice daily at the ordinary milking times for the main herd'. Kitty is by a K.C.8., Sunflower bull named Erin View Playboy. He was owned and used by Mr. R. Fleming. Kitty’s dam was by Rosalind’s Squire, and was the highest producer for a 2-year-old at Mr. Murray’s establishment. Mr Murray describes Lizzie as “Just a wonderful fluke.” He bought her in the saleyards as a heifer as he thought she looked like a producer.
