DENIAL OF RUMOURS

THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR. “ I TOOK NO INTEREST IN POLITICS.” DUKE HURT AT CIRCULATION OF TALES. (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tol. Copyright.) (Received August •6, 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, August 5. The Duchess of Windsor has never had any of Queen Alexandra’s jewels, states a correspondent of the London Star, for whose reliability the Star vouches. The article quotes Miss Helena Normanton, barrister and journalist, who visited the Duchess before the wedding as saying with the fullest approval of the then Mrs Warfield: “The Duke of Windsor never at any time inherited any jewellery from any member of the Royal Family, and Mrs Warfield has never been in possession of any jewellery ever owned by Queen Alexandra.”

The article deals with rumours emanating in the French press that the Duchess had lent a ready ear to Nazi propa-

ganda, which apparently originated in an unfounded rumour that she was a member of Herr von Ribbentrop’s circle, regarding which Mrs Warfield told Miss Normanton that she was only in Herr von Ribbentrop’s company twice at receptions and never alone. She had never had more than a few words of small talk with him. “I took no interest in politics,” said Mrs Warfield.

The article says that the Duke of Windsor has so far made no answer to his traducers, but his friends know how deeply he has been wounded by slanderous tongues. It has hurt and dismayed him to find how widespread has been the circulation of the most fantastic rumours about the Duchess and himself.
