The Minister of Defence, speaking on the Estimates debate In the Diet, said it was doubtful whether the Japanese garrison would be able to maintain its present attitude in the face of the steady advance of the Chinese troops to North China. The Japanese were fully prepared for punitive measures If the Chinese assumed the offensive. It is estimated that 2500 Chinese were killed at Nanyuan and 150 at Tungchow, while the Japanese disarmed 8200 Chinese in Pelyuan, Tungchow and West Peking. They also captured four field guns, four howitzers, eleven trench mortars, over 200 Czech machine-guns, 5000 rifles, and quantities of revolvers and swords. A message from Peking states that the Japanese rounded up and annihilated 250 Chinese police, whom, it is alleged, participated in the Tungchow massacre. Revealing Japan negotiating with China simultaneously with military operations, the Premier, in the House of Representative, added that it was hoped to settle the troubles in North China, also to regulate the fundamental Sino-Japanese relations. China and Japan should co-operate against Communism, which was responsible for fanning anti-Japanese sentiments. The Japanese Cabinet has approved a supplementary Budget of £24,000,000 for expenditure on operations in North China. A sum of £5,700,000 had been voted already for the same purpose.
