NATIONAL CONTROL.
REFORM OF CALF TRADE. FARMERS’ UNION OPINION. The opinion that the only satisfactory solution for placing the bobby calf trade on an equitable basis was for national control of the industry was voiced at the monthly meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union in 'Hamilton, today. While agreeing that the pool system in use in some districts was working satisfactorily, Mr. W. L. Ranstead considered that proprietary concerns were in a position to wreck them by tempting members from a particular pool with a higher return for their calves. Nothing short of national control could eliminate exploitation of the farmers. An allegation that carriers were “making a good thing” out of the bobby calf trade was made by MF. C. J. Pierce. He considered that the charges oould be lowered materially and said that under the present rates some carriers were making as much as £6 a day.
