THE GRAND NATIONAL

TRACK STILL SOFT. CONDITION OF IRIBH COMET. L. J. ELLIS RECOVERED. (By Telegrapn.—Pres* Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Following overnight frost the sun shone brightly this morning and conditions were pleasant for training operations at Riccarton. The ground, however, remained, soft after the rain earlier in the week. The No. 8 grass track was open for fast work and it was patronised by a few horses but most of them were 6iven only short sprints without being at top speed. The majority of work was steady pacing on the sand. Burglar went twice round on the grass at sound pace, moving freely and was all right after the task. Brigadore, a late arrival, did strong work on the sand. He looks very well. The present intention of his ownertrainer is not to give the horse any Jumping before tlie Grand National Steeplechase, in which case he will take on the race without any previous experience of the fences. Irish Comet worked at useful pace on the sand. His rider, J. F. Fergus, is due to arrive to-morrow morning when the Waikato horse will be schooled possibly over the steeplechase -◄ course. ’ Red Sun was out doing strong pace work. He has made great improvement In the Joint that gave trouble over the week-end. Kelly the Crow Schooled. •Kelly the Crow was given a school over a round of the fences in the middle and jumped them well. Culverden Jumped in good style over three hurdles. Silver Streak, Mount Val, Petersham and Scrap arrived from Oamaru last night. The West Coast horses Hunting Bag and Land Raid were sent home last night, both being amiss. L. J. Ellis was out riding useful work on a number of horses. He stated that the Injured shoulder was giving no trouble now and that he would be riding at the Grand National meeting next week.
