HIGH YIELDS.
Dominion's Great Kecords. Outstanding Jersey Cattle. The astonishingly high yields of individual cows should also, however, be given close attention. They indicate the possibility of largely increasing the heavy producing class, resulting in a wider range of blood lines from which prepotent strains of the most profitable cows may reasonably be expected., Outstanding Records. There are many outstanding records to the credit of New Zealand Jerseys, but all of these are too numerous to mention. Leaving out the fractions, some of the more prominent records are:—Woodlands Felicie, 12201 b. butterfat (as a four-year-old) ; Holly Oak Annie, 10561 b. butterfat; Ivondale Tiny Heather, 1061; Pretty’s Flirt, 1010; Vivandiere, 1036; Sultan’s Daisy, 968; Ivondale Golden Lass, 905; Cousin Grace, 935; Ivondale Silver Rainbow, 950; Kolora Fairy Queen, 959; Curilla’s Twylish Girl, 970; Coniston Goldie, 919; Rexcourt Lady Magnet, 880; Beechlands Preference, 847; Pinewoods Viola, 852; Riverdale Waif, 884; Erinview Queen Bee, 880; Greencroft Golden Grace, 864; Ngahiwi Grant Queen, 821; Ngahiwi Lady Romance, 834; Reshure Nova Supreme, 945; and Golden Clara, 860 lb. butterfat. With the advent of the Group Herd Testing Movement, the advancement of the breed was rapid. In almost every part of New Zealand it was found that the leading herds in the various testing associations were those in which Jersey blood predominated. To the progressive dairyfarmer anxious to build up the productive ability of his herd, there was only one logical course of action—the introduction of a good Jersey bull. Herd testing undoubtedly proved the wonderful prepotency of the Jersey Bull, its remarkable ability to impress its superior butterfat and milk producing qualities upon its offspring, hence the great demand of today for Jersey sires. Climatic Conditions. That the Jersey thrives under a wide range of climatic conditions and fully meets the exacting needs of dairymen everywhere is shown in the flourishing herds that are established throughout New Zealand, from the far north to the Bluff. The Jersey as an economical producer is unrivalled and numerous examples could be produced to substantiate this claim. The ever-extending predominance of the breed throughout the Dominion is a natural corollary of its proved excellence. The praises of the beauty, the docility, the longevity, the productiveness and the reproductiveness of the Jersey cow have been universally sung. In New Zealand there are daily additions to the admirers of the breed because of its eminent suitability for practical dairying, repeatedly proved by factory returns. The selection of cattle having hereditary factors for high testing and high milk yield is a steppingstone towards the attainment of the perfect dairy animal, and it is by means of the Jersey blood that this ideal is being accomplished. —lssued by the New Zealand Jersey Breeders’ Association and published by arrangement.
