Substantial Increases In stakes have been decided on by the Auckland Racing Club, the Increase for the spring meeting being £7OO and for the sum- ; mer meeting £3300. H. N. Wiggins. ;H. N. Wiggins will have the mount ! on Old Surrey at the National meeting next week. Applications for Judge. A decision to call for applications for the position of judge has been decided on by the oommittee of the Auckland Racing Club, for its meetings in the I 1937-38 season. Queen of Song. Queen of Song looked in bright healthy shape when produced for the Brabazon Handicap, and the excellent raoe she ran will bring Jier into favour for the Winter Cup. Tybalt. Tybalt has rejoined the active workers at Ellerslie and looks to have derived benefit from his brief let up. He Is to he prepared for spring racing andi should pay expenses in the new term. Counterflight. Counterflight drew No. 3 at the barrier for the 'Camla Hack Handicap at the ‘Christchurch Hunt. He started 1/2 in the betting and was a certainty beaten Judging by the run put in over the final furlong. He should make amends at the Grand National meeting.

TRENCH FIQHT. Unaffected by his escapade at the Chrlstohupoh Hunt on Saturday Trenoh Fight has been working In pleasing style at Rlooarton and on Tuesday morning he reeled off half-a-mlle In 50s, the Anal three furlongs being out out In 37 3-ss. According to reports from southern headquarters he will strip In splendid heart for his Winter Cup engagement and will lose no friends following last Saturday's Incident when he bolted for fully three miles before being pulled up.

Catalogue. Catalogue, who Is to be ridden <by W. J. Broughton In the Winter Cup, has thrown off the effect of his Trentham Injury and is expected to strip in pood fettle for engagements at Riccarjton. Pakuranga Hunt. Nominations for all events of the Pakuranga Hunt, at Ellerslie, on August 21, close to-morrow (Friday), at 5 p.m. with the secretary (Mr W. S. Spence), 97 Shortland Street. Auckland. Was Tried Previously. A recent addition to the traok workers at Ellerslie is the Depredation gelding Tahae Mea. When In training about four years ago he contested numerous races without success, and will need to Improve in order to pay his way. Kelly Recommissioned. Kelly has been recommissioned and Is looking In excellent order to commence a further (preparation. (Kelly is a fine stayer when thoroughly attuned and he gave a taste of his ability when he won the Autumn Handicap, at Avondale, towards the end of last season. K. Voltre's Hopes. K. Voitre expects to ride again In tho spring. Voitre won his way to the front rank among Melbourne Jockeys when he went from New Zealand, but he broke a leg some months ago, and the process of knitting has been comparalively slow. He is at present in the north of Queensland. Klltowyn. Klltowyn Is working In improved style and Is rapidly assuming racing •shape. The other morning he was associated over a round with Valmint and pleased liy the manner in which lie was j revelling In his work over the conclud- ' lng singes of the trial. j Prince Colossus ts getting through a solid preparation at Ellerslie and has improved a good deal during the last! couple of months. He tins had several trials over the schooling hurdles re- { ocntly and lias shown a fair amount, of ability for a beginner. Jt is intended) to race Prince Colossus on the Hat at; the Pakuranga meeting, and if tlie ‘ ground is heavy it will enhance his . prospects, for he is a proved mudlark.; Shy Improved. Shy appears lo he an improved horse j as the result of his outing at the Christchurch Hunt and the other morning at Hiccarton he shaped well in a trial over five furlongs in company with Top Rank. Shy is handily placed in the Winter 'Cup and is not without chances. No Flow. The form seen at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting will furnish mu oh food for thought in connection with Hie t’irand National meeting. The form has, of course, lo be considered with that, of others that did not appear at. Ilie meeting, and so the pros and cons of this, that and the other, like Tennyson's brook flow on for ever; So also docs the money flow through the totalisator, hut not so much flows out I as the amount that flows in.

I Condition of Versant. I Versant has been progressing well in the work allotted him in recent weeks at Auokland headquarters and the other morning, revelling in the heavy going, he reeled off a smart six furlongs in time which was indicative of his splendid condition. He is to raoe at the Pakuranga Hunt this month and will not be without a following on the machines. ; | , j ;

MAY SONG. May Song scored attractively on either day of the recent Poverty Bay fixture and It was her early brilliance that assisted her ohance® to a material extent. On the first day 6he ran right away from the opposition and while on the second day she had nothing to spare In a desperate finish with Golden Blonde she wa9 holding the latter over the very deoldlng stages, now that she nas oeoome solid there should be further suooesa in store Tor the three-quarter sister to Pink Ooat. Her next appearanoe will In all probability be at the Pakuranga Hunt, at ElI ere lie.

Wotan’e Chances. ‘‘l did not expect that he would be handicapped at any more than about 8.6 for the Melbourne Cup, and they gave him 9.0., said J. Fryer after he reached Melbourne. He said that with Wotan at his best, he would fear most the younger horses, whose form as three-year-olds was still to be disclosed. Asked how he accounted for the poor showing Wotan had made in Sydney in the autumn. “It is easily explained,” he replied. “He came straight from a very cold summer in New Zealand to a very hot autumn in Sydney, and he could not get accustomed to the abrupt change. Bookmakers Lose Heavily. English bookmakers claim that they lost £700,000 on the last meeting at Ascot. Out of 28 events in the four days 14 favourites and three second favourites won—one favourite winning at 10 to 1. The Big Six of London’s bookmakers lost more than £200,000 in the four day’s racing. “There was not one redeeming factor about this year’s Asoot,” said the representative of one "old Arm.” We lost money on every day of the meoting. Nearly all the horses ran to form and upset our calculations. Punters had the time of their lives: one man cleared over £3OOO on a £SO double. Very few backers this year indulged in backing outsiders.” People who fancy or gamble on outsiders now have the totalisator 1o accommodate them and get the legitimate odds. Strang© Happenings. facing people are beginning to talk abbut the strange things that are happening on the turf in Victoria, (says the “Sporting Globe”). There have been glaring reversals of form, strong suspicions of horses being doped, and one event recently could quite easily be dubbed “a boat race.” Keen racing men see these things. They are ever on the alert watching for them, which Is quite natural seeing that the turf Is a business with a host of people. And then again when the stewards have recourse to betting books they aren’t always successful in bowling out a party of wrongdoers. Wagers do appear In books, but I sometimes wonder how much importance oan be attached to some of these wagers. The event which I have referred to as a “boat” race took place quite recently on one of the “big” courses. There appeared to be only two triers.
