MODERN PALESTINE

RETURN OF THE JEWS. OPPOSITION BY ARABS. VISITING THEOLOGIST’S ADDRESS. Palestine, as affected by the return of the Jews to their native land and the consequent opposition offered by the Arab population, was dealt with by Dr. C. J. Rolls, the visiting theolo11st, in an address in the Alexandra Hall last evening. Dr. Rolls maintained that the Jews were not enoroaohlng upon the land occupied by the Arabs, but had taken up country hitherto untouohed. Where onoe there was nothing but sandy desert there were now cities carrying large populations Installed with modern conveniences. Dr. Rolls’ leoture was illustrated with lantern slides. Oranges were probably the main export of the country, and this fruit grew in abundance, being sent all over the world. Wheat also grew prolifioally. In these areas no Arabs had settled during the last 20 years, and nobody could say the Jews were turning them, out. The former were causing all the trouble in the country, and yet no further room oould be found for the Jews. Ant.i-Semitism was driving the Jews back to their homeland. Hitler had committed a very unfair thing in turning the German nation against the Jews, a people who had no real homeland to turn to for protection, while the manner In which he had directed his purge was disgraceful. Howeyer, it was estimated that some £200,000,000 had come Into Palestine since the evacuation of the Jews from Germany. Schools had been erected in the new towns built by the Jews, said Dr. Rolls, while large engineering works had also been constructed, and the industrial Ingenuity of the people was bearing fruit.
