WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

AT PIRONGIA. A large party of members of the Pirongla Women’s Institute had a memorable trip to Hamilton recently, where they were hospitably entertained by Mrs A. Ramsay, of Hillcrest. The afternoon passed very quickly and the guests were greatly Interested in the artistic work done by Mrs Ramsay—oil painting, pokerwork, marquetry, shell flowers, and pewter work, etc. Mrs Ramsay also kindly lhowed members her wonderful tabulated collection of New Zealand seaihells. Before leaving she gave each guest % collection of plants from her large garden. Mrs Lorimer, on behalf of the Institute, thanked Mrs Ramsay for her kindness in giving those present such a pleasant and Instructive afternoon. AT OHAUPO. The monthly meeting of the Ohaupo Women’s Institute was held on July 29, when there was a good attendance of members and friends. The meeting opened with the Institute song, and business was attended to. Invitations to birthdays of sister Institutes were received and accepted. The competition for gingerbread was won by Miss Z. Turnwald, and the flower competition (three best blooms) was well competed for and resulted as follows: Mrs P. Bell 1, Mrs Fletcher and Miss J. Edwards 2. The demonstration (cane baskets) was very interesting, and members all signified a keen desire to go on with the work. Miss May Findsen (the demonstrator) was warmly thanked for her demonstration. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Evans, Ralph, and Misses J. and R. Edwards, and during tea one new member was proposed and welcomed. The meeting closed >\'ith the National Anthem. AT WAITERIMU—MAT AH UR A. The Waiterlmu-Matahura Women’s Institute members gathered at the home of Mrs J. Grundy recently to bid farewell to one of its members, Mrs lies, who is leaving the district. Games, competitions, and vocal and elocutionary items helped to pass a very pleasant afternoon. The president on behalf of the Institute presented Mrs lies with a salad bowl, and little Bethel Storey also presented a posy. AT WHITIKAHU. The Whltikahu Women’s Institute birthday party held in Hansen’s Social Hall on Saturday evening, when there was a large attendance. The evening was spent with games, songs, community singing, competitions and dancing. Competitions were won by Mrs MoCallum, Mr Hansen and Mrs Curphy; throwing the darts, G. Amon; rings, Mr Harper; hidden numbers, Mrs Clark and Mrs C. Hansen. Songs were given by Mr Churchill (Huntly) and Mrs McCallum; and community singing was led by Mrs McCallum, with Mrs Bennett at the piano. Supper was served by the Women’s Institute members, after which the birthday cake, which was donated by Mr J. Brown, made by Mrs Brown, and iced by Mrs Best, was cut. Mrs Bennett presented Mrs Boyce, the president, with a beautiful bouquet of violets and daphne on behalf of the members, as a token of their appreciation for what Mrs Boyce had done for the Institute. Mrs Baden Law presented Miss Norma Best, the secretary, with a shoulder spray. Dancing was enjoyed, music being played by Mrs Bennett (piano), Mr L. Darlow (mouth-organ), and Mr S. Darlow (accordion). The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” concluded a happy evening. Among those present were:—Mesdamcs Boyce, Scott, Bennett, McCallum, B. Law, McConnell, Best, Darlow (Auckland), Clark, Anderson, 'Kernoghan, Siefort, Curphy, Findlay, Jamieson, Preest, Hansen (4), Brown, McKenzie (Auckland), Williams, Tatham, Fraser, Harper, Sanders, L. Darlow (Auckland), Smead, B. Rowe (Tauranga). Misses V. Rest, L. Amon, P. Fahey, N. Best, C. Bonnett, M. Williams, Betty Scott, C.wenda Boyce. L. McCosh (Christchurch), Valerie Goodman, Betty Tout (Auckland), M Clark. AT TAUWHARE. A very successful dance, organised by the members or the Tauwhare Women’s Institute, was held in the hall recently. The hall was decorated In the Institute colours, green and gold, srrecnery being arranged around the walls and stage. Clayton’s Orchestra played excellent music. Mr F. Bales being M Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs L. Andrews and Miss M. Andrews and Mr T. Neil. A toilet set donated for competition by Mrs Griffin, was won by Miss A. Windsor, another competition being won by Mr E. Brown, of Matangl. Mnong those present were: Mesdames Mlwooil. wearing royal blue georgette and Lire. and blue ermlnette coatee; \V.
