DIFFICULT TASK
NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS GLAMORGAN LEAD BY 371 RUNS. VIVIAN’S FINE BOWLING EFFORT. (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the team.) (Received August. 3, 3.15 p.m.) SWANSEA, August 2. The New Zealand cricketers have a difficult task before them in making the required number of runs to beat Glamorgan. Batting first the county made 229, to which the tourists replied with 127. ’Glamorgan in their second time at the wickets, compiled 340 and the visitors have lost, in their second- innings, three wickets for 71 runs at stumps. This leaves them with seven wickets in hand and 371 runs to get. Bowling for New’ Zealand in Glamorgan's second innings, Vivian took four wickets for 114 runs, in 43 overs. New Zealand spent a fatiguing day chasing the leather in brilliant sunshine. The outfield was fast and the wicket hard. Dyson and Davies, the opening pair, for the county, established a fine partnership, which yielded 157 runs. Smart later hit brilliantly, his score including 10 fours and three sixes. Weakened Attack. New Zealand's weakened attack stood' the testing creditably. Vivian, who
was practically inexhaustible, bowled almost continuously from one end despite his injured bowling hand- 'He had one deadly spell, just after breaking the first wicket partnership, taking three wickets for four runs in four overs. Lamason and Moloney were steady for long periods. Carson was effective with the second new ball. The casualty list is growing as Kerr retired with a poisoned heel. Enthusiastic Welshmen. Enthusiastic Welshmen from all parts of the principality, thronged Saint 'Helen’s ground, where Swansea beat the All Blacks. The attendance was 12,000, easily eclipsing that at the Manchester test match. New Zealand, who batted for a little over an hour, began their difficult task determinedly but three wickets fell in quick succession to the slow lefthander, Davies.
