The diplomatic correspondent of the Daily Telegraph ■states that the Prime Minister, Mr Chamberlain, in his letter to Signor Mussolini, suggested that a meeting of the Locarno Powers be held in October. The Foreign Secretary, Mr Eden, Is already sounding Germany with a view to the attendance of Baron von Neurath. Count Ciano's proposed visit depends upon Britain recognising Italy’s sovereignty over Abyssinia. This in turn is largely dependent upon the League Assembly's forthcoming decision. It is believed that Mr. Neville Chamberlain considers .that if a general European reconciliation is achieved the problems arising from the Spanish war will disappear. ROME, August 2. There Is no doubt here that Signor Mussolini will reply to Mr. Chamberlain with an equally friendly letter, as it Is understood that Mr. Chamberlain emphasised that Britain desired to see Anglo-Ilalian relations replaced on the same basis as before the Abyssinian war. Sir Eric Drummond, British Ambassador to Italy, had a ‘‘long and cordial meeting” with Count Ciano. They discussed Mr Chamberlain’s letter and the state of Anglo-Itallan relations. While Signor Mussolini and Mr Chamberlain are talking of friendship, Italy Is fostering antl-Britlsh propaganda In the Near East, says the Dally Herald. According to the journal Signor Mussolini desires to revive the ancient Roman province of Syria as an independent Arab State under Italian tutelage, comprising Palestine, modern Syria and Sinai. The Jews would be absorbed or eliminated.
