The second of the series of yacht races for the America’s Cup was sailed to-day at Newport, Rhode Island. Mr Harold Vanderbilt’s Ranger again beat Mr T. O. M. Sopwlth’s Endeavour 11., the British challenger. besplte crossing the starting line ahead and maintaining a 700 yards lead for the first hour In a seven-mile south-by-west breeze, the Endeavour 11. rapidly began to fall behind the Ranger. The American boat caught up with the Endeavour 11. before the end of the first leg, and was at one point seven miles ahead at the ten-mile mark. It was 2.25 miles ahead wheij the run home started, and approximately 2.5 miles ahead when finished. The British boat was sailing smartly a stiffening twelve-mile wind at the ">nd, and in a longer race she might have made a better showing, but, as It was, she suffered one of the most serious defeats in the history of the Cup. Next Race To-morrow. Mr Sopwlth requested a one-day rest, under the rules. The next contest will therefore be held on Wednesday. To-day’s race was for the most part run In a hdavy mist.
