" THE FRUIT OF THE BPIRIT 18 . Not merely In the words you say, Not only in your deeds confessed, But in the most unconscious way Is Christ expressed. Is it a heavenly smile? A holy light upon your brow? Oh, no, I felt His presence while You laughed just now. For me ’twas not the truth you taught, To you so clear, to me so dim; But when you came to me you brought A sense of Him. And from your eyes He beckons m«, And from your heart His love is shed, Till I lose sight of you—and see The Christ instead. —M. Helen Hercus. DAILY TEXT. Sunday. OUR RELATION TO OTHERB. The Inner life reveals Itself not In detail, but In Its spirit. . . . What Is In us is found out, and it is this which most tells for good or evil on those who know us. We are, for the most part, wholly unconscious of it, but, for that very reason, how watchful we should be to make our Inner life holy, harmless, undeflled, the friend of justice, pity and peace, aspiring, true and free, so ttjat these things may stream from us unconsciously. For when we look it In the face It Is an awful thought that wc cannot prevent our real character from doing its work among men, that what we are, not what we seem, is that which is really Influencing others. —Stopford Brooke. THE SPIRIT RELEASED. Life appears to me to be too short to be spent in nursing animosity or In registering wrongs. We are, and must be, one and all, burdened with faults in this world; but the time will come when, I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies; when debasement and sin will fall from us and only the spark will remain, the Impalpable principle of life and thought, pure as when It left the Creator to inspire the creature; whence it came, it will return, perhaps to pass through gradations of glory. It Is a creed In which I delight, to which I cling. It makes Eternity a rest, a mighty home; not a terror and an abyss. Besides, with this creed revenge never worries my heart, degradation never too deeply disgusts me, Injustice never crushes me too low; I live in calm, looking to the end. —Anonymous. FAITH. We are all of us like the weavers of the Gobelins, who, following out the pattern of a well-known artist, endeavour to match the threads of divers colours on the wrong side of the woof, and do not see the result of their labours. It is only when the texture Is complete that they can admire at their ease those lovely flowers and figures, those splendid pictures, worthy of the palaces of kings. So It is with lis. We work, we suffer, and we see neither the end nor the fruit. But God sees it, and when He releases us from our task, lie will disclose to our wondering gaze what lie, the great artist, everywhere present and Invisible, has woven out of 1 those toils that now seem so sterile, | and lie will then deign to hang up, in I lis Palace of gold, the flimsy web that ‘we,have spun.—Frederic Ozonan.
