WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
AT MATANGI. The members of the Matangi Women’s Institute and their friends, who attended the Institute’s sixth birthday party, held in the Matangi Hall recently, spent a most enjoyable evening. The supper tables and stage were prettily decorated in the Institute colours, purple and gold, greenery being festooned along the stage and walls. * The evening took the form of a social and dance, music being played by Mr J. Battersby (piano), and Mr Dold (violin). Mr D. Faulkner was M.C., and a novelty waltz was won by Mrs J. Shaw and Mr E. Thompson. Items were given during the evening and were much enjoyed. Songs, Miss E. Shaw; pianoforte solos, Miss Alcye Grant; elocutionary selections. Miss Waite (Hamilton); and Highland dancing by Mr Bruce McClennan. A cushion donated by Mrs Wainright, for competition, was won by Mr Jack McClennan, and a gift given by Mrs Russell, was won by Mr C. Jamieson. A delicious supper was served at which the beautiful birthday cake, iced in the Institute colours, was cut. The candles were lit by Mrs Martini, of the Bunnythorpe Institute, and Mrs Pope, of the Tauwhare Institute: blew them out. Mrs MacFarlane, of the Feildlng Institute, cut the cake, and wished the Matangi Institute many happy returns of its sixth birthday. Mrs Whewell then presented Mrs McKerrow, the Matangi president, with a beautiful bouquet, with the good wishes of all the members. Dancing then continued. AT NAWTON-ROTOKAURI. A very enjoyable concert and dance was held in Nawton Hall on July 27. There was a large attendance, and the programme provided by members of the Performers’ Club, under the leadership of Mr Bynon-Powell was an entertaining one. Songs, dances, sketches and elocutionary items were much enjoyed by the large number present. Supper was followed by a dance, the music being played by Mr Morrell. who also acted as M.C. Extras were played by Mrs Gregory. In the absence of Mrs Cook, Mrs i Harris thanked the members of the Performers' Club for their assistance in providing the concert programme, j The Institute's share of the proJ coeds wili be devoted to improve - j meats to the hall.
AT WARDVILLE. The Wardvillc Women’s Institute hold their meeting in the Wardvillp Hall recently, Mrs Stark presiding over a good attendance. One new member was welcomed. Mrs Stanford, of Waharoa, gave a demonstration of egg-shell mosaic. The roll-call, “A quick dish for tea, Institute night,” brought forth some amusement. The competitions were: Silver paper pictures. Miss Elliot 1. Mrs Elliot 2, ; Miss Parker 3; shortbread, Mrs Nowson 1. Mrs Lockycr 2. Mrs Hughes • 3; best flower. Mrs Newson 1, Mrs I Stark 2. Miss Elliot 3. j Mrs Stark and Mrs McDonald were i proposed and seconded as delegates | to attend the show meetings, and Mrs Stark was voted as delegate for the bi-annual council meetings. Mr Coombes gave a very enjoyable 20 minutes of readings. Afternoon tea was served, and the National Anthem closed Hie meeting. AT ROTO-O-RANGI. The July meeting of the Roto-o-rangi Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Workman, Mrs
Wakefield presiding. After singing the Institute song and reciting the creed, the business of the meeting was dealt with. Mrs Burton was responsible for the following motto: “If you don’t get what .you like, like what you get.” The rollcall, “Sandwich fillings,” was well responded to. Discussions on constructive prob- i lems, in which most members took part, proved absorbing. To an appreciative audience, Mrs Pegg gave a demonstration and talk, the subject being "Designs." Mrs Wakefield proposed that a waterlilv be the floral emblem of the Institute, the idea being unanimously adopted by mem- , bers. Miss Jeanic Reid undertook the j task of working the Institute banner. | Mrs Duncan won an educational competition, the prize being presented by Mrs Reid. In the following competitions the awards were as follows: Darned socks. Mrs Pegg 1, Mrs Reid 2, Mrs Wakefield 3; toys, Mrs Pegg 1, Mrs H. Martin 2. Mrs Hills 3; novelties. Mrs Wakefield and Miss C. Workman (equal) 1, Mrs Wakefield 2, Mrs Pegg 3; scones and biscuits, i Mrs Wakefield 1, Mrs H. Martin 2. ] Mrs R. Martin presented a prize for 1 darned sox. Mrs Wakefield was appointed group meeting delegate. The hostesses who served afternoon tea were Mrs G. Reid, Mrs Burton and Mrs Cooper. A happy after- | noon ended wilh the singing of the National Anthem.
