Record for Tour

NEW ZEALAND MAKES 495. PAGE MISSES CENTURY. SURREY DISMISSED FOR 277. (From the Special Correspondent ot the United Press Association with the team.) (Received July 30. 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, July 29. On the second day of the match against Surrey, New Zealand continued their -first innings, in fine weather and on a good wicket. Batting yesterday the visitors made 459 for nine wickets and to-day carried their total to 495 before the last wicket fell. Surrey replied with 277 and New Zealand in their second innings have no wickets down for 4 2 runs. Tiie 10th wicket partnership had added 52 runs when Page was caught

at cover for 90 runs. lie hit seven fours. After making the highest total of the tour, New Zealand, achieved unexpected but meritorious success in the field, dismissing a reputedly strong batting side for a moderate total on a perfect wicket. With the attack impoverished by the absence of Cowio and Dunning, the former retired with stomach trouble after taking two cheap wickets and (lie latter with leg soreness, Hadlee and Weir were the only bowlers left above slow pace. Only Sandham among the early batsmen, was comfortable. He stayed at the wickets nearly three hours. Moloney enjoyed a hectic period, of deadly effectiveness, taking three wickets for no runs in two overs. Watts and Gover Hit Out. Surrey had eight down for 147 runs. Watts and Gover, two bowlers, hitting vigorously, added 124 runs at a great pace. Watts gave a fine display lasting a little over an hour, lie hit nine fours and Gover six fours. Gallichan had a field day in the slips, taking three good catches. Moloney’s success again illustrated how invaluable a leg spin bowler is in England. In view of the depleted attack, the tourists were unwilling to attempt the task of dismissing tho county a second time, and the follow-on rule was not enforced. New Zealand batted three quarters of an hour. There was surprising interest in the match for an off day, the attendance being about 7000. NEW ZEALAND.
