IMPORTANT POST.

MR M. J. GALVIN PROMOTED. INSPECTOR FOR NORTH ISLAND. Mr M. J. Galvin, officer in chargi of the Lands and Survey Department, Hamilton, has been appointed Supervising Field Inspector and Chief Inspector of Reserves for the North Island. He will be attached to the head office' of the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, and will commence his new duties Immediately. Until the present pressure of rehabilitation work is reduced, enabling arrangements to be made for a successor in Hamilton Mr Galvin will remain in Hamilton and In addition to his extended duties will continue the supervision of the Waikato District. A member of the Galatea Estate Management Committee, he will retain this appointment in his new position. Mr Galvin has been connected with the supervision of Crown lands and soldiers’ settlements for the past 17 years, being seven years in Taranaki and the past ten years In Hamilton. During this time he has served on many Important departmental committees and he possesses a very wide knowledge of farming values and problems. An ardent supporter of native bush preservation and endowed with exceptional knowledge of indigenous forestry, Mr Galvin is eminently fitted for the post of Inspector of Reserves. He was a member of the Urewera Committee on whose report the Government considered a policy for the control of that vast and beautiful forest. His intimate knowledge of that rugged region. Its Maori inhabitants and varied bird life Is not equalled by any other officer. Mr Galvin has had long war sendee, having left New Zealand with the Main Body and again with the Bth Reinforcements. He has always taken a very keen Interest in the Returned Soldiers’ Association and is on the executive of the Waikato branch. A keen mountaineer, he is a life member of the Ruapehu Ski Club, while he is also a member of the Hamilton Orphans’ Club.
